Development news
2018.3
The FlightGear development team is delighted to announce the v2018.3 release of FlightGear, the free, open-source flight simulator. This new version contains many exciting new features, enhancements and bugfixes including usability improvements to the launcher, improved scenery for Hawaii and the Arctic island of Jan Mayan, Italian, Chinese and Russian translations, better visuals for AI and MP aircraft. This version was released on 6th December 2018 and as always is available from [1]. See the changelog at Changelog_2018.3!
After introducing the scripted releases four times a year, the FG development team decided to have a discussion to compare this experience with what we had before, and the result of this is that we want
- less changes of the default airport
- make one of the four yearly releases especially stable
This stable release is planned to be the fall release – so you can expect this release to be especially well tested.

Updated aircraft
The Cessna 182 S got another big update, which makes flying more realistic. So the KT76c transponder has now a TST mode enabled, the "R" reply annunciator behaves correctly now (blink/steady/off, depending on mode and power) and the transponder is multiplayer compatible with ATCPie.
With the new update, flying in known icing conditions is now prohibited as well - icing effect to wings, fuselage, engine and propeller is simulated now. The simulation detects icing conditions (vertical layers of clouds, OAT, visibility, precipitation) and affects the Flight Dynamic Model. You will see it on the fuselage, and feel it when the ice decreases lift, increase drag, decrease thrust and you have to make an emergency landing before you stall!
Another reason for an emergency landing could be use of the enhanced failure manager for training. Let fail some specific systems, or use the Surprise-mode - anyway you will learn to watch your instruments! Beside all this, some bugs had been fixed and other corrections applied. Download it from official FGAddon or from developers repository on github.com.
