Advanced Tracking System
This projects continues to advance and test a tracking system that provides more flexibility in the range of supporting navigation instrument, and real-time reconfiguration.
A potential substitute to the NAV based tracking system Very responsive, yet flexible for varying heading offset
Current Progress
- Stage 1 - accuracy and feasibility tests - passed
- Stage 2 - runtime-reconfigurability tests - passed
- Stage 3 - Enhanced flexibility in Refernce Points - on-going
- Offset track
- NAV independent fix tracking
- Variable fix reference sources, including NDB, FIX, GPS, etc. and instant aircraft position.
This latter stage will allow the tracking system to function completely independent of the NAV radio. Pilots may consider this a step towards less knobbing and tuning to NAV stations :) This stage also seeks to enhance system accuracy, making it usable for accurate VFR and IFR landing - YES. Right in the middle (I will promise). The following image, from the archives, was taken during feasibility tests using an early version of the system - by controlling the vertical navigation, the 'awexome' pilot could land on the runway shoulders.
