Talk:Simplifying Aircraft Deployment

This is currently specific to FlightGear aircraft only, however there are clearly lots of people who would also appreciate having comparable facilities to more easily retrieve/install and maintain scenery tiles. So, assuming a generic approach this could also be used to provide support for managing other FlightGear resources such as Aircraft, Scenery, Localizations, Joystick configurations--MILSTD 23:33, 16 March 2008 (EDT)
- While this is a good idea the requirement is very different. The ability to modify tiles is very difficult to do at the moment as you need to "re-compile" the tile after you have made your terrain change. I don't think that this is easy at this point. Gorilla 18:52, 7 March 2008 (EST)
- Actually, the idea was only related (and limited) to providing the same "management" facilities for other FG resources, i.e. "installation/uninstallation", so that users may more easily install customized FlightGear resources such as for example enhanced scenery packages. Checking out the most recent customized scenery package (for KLSV) and its installation instructions (see [1]), it's clear there's some redundancy compared to installing aircraft. So, preferably such an "FG Resource Manager" would not restrict its low level functionality (copy/delete files & folders) to Aircraft, only - but rather be generic enough, so that it can also be used for other resources and purposes. In the context of enabling users to more easily install customized/enhanced scenery, without touching FG_ROOT, this would mainly boil down to supporting an additional facility that would allow users to specify a custom directory for shared models, i.e. preferably within $FG_HOME, so that FG_ROOT can remain pristine.--MILSTD 23:33, 16 March 2008 (EDT)
