Overview
The F-35 Lightning II is a Lockheed Martin fifth-generation single-engine multirole stealth fighter designed for both air superiority and strike missions. Two variants are available in FlightGear:
- F-35A — Conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL). Powered by the Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 with an internal GAU-22/A 25mm cannon.
- F-35B — Short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL). Powered by the F135-PW-600 with a Rolls-Royce lift fan and swivel exhaust nozzle.
Avionics
- AN/APG-81 — AESA radar with air-to-air modes, canvas MFD display
- IFF — Identification Friend or Foe system
- Datalink — aircraft-to-aircraft data sharing
- HMDS — Helmet Mounted Display System with off-boresight target cueing in IR mode
