English to German translations - keeping the English in sync

Hi Skybike! Awesome work with the German translations! I've noticed that for a lot of your translations, that you've improved the German text to a higher level than the English text, sometimes with more detail. When doing this, could you also bring the English article to the same standard? As the English article is considered the standard, there is a high probability that someone might remove your improvements in the future to synchronise with the English article. Cheers!

Hi Bugman! Thank you for the hint. Next time I'll try to add every improvement to the English article too. But in most of the cases the German translations will be a bit longer than the English pages, because some English words have too complex meanings for one german word and some sentences would get another wrong meaning after translating. Appart from that the main language of FG is English, including parts of the software, wiki, youtube-tutorials,... so I want to give the reader the English word too (what's AoA->"Anstellwinkel" and why ATC) and some English self explanatory functions have to be explained in German... But all others I will "translate back" to English next time.
Aren't you the creator of the great new infobox aircraft? While translating my de:ATC-Instanz project I have seen an old Infobox Aircraft in the article. I thought about your infobox (it looks better, is translated and automatically synchronised on every translation), but there is no Craft type (category) link for ATC given. What do you think about adding ATC to craft type? As far as i've understood it you can download and start ATC as an airplane- but can not fly it. So is ATC something like an airplane?
If you are interested in it: There are currently two ATC-"airplane" articles in the wiki: ATC-FS and ATC-aircraft with its translation de:ATC-Instanz. A possible category to link to would be Category:Air Traffic Control (by the way, they are directly linked to Category:Aircraft too). The shown link text could be |en=Air traffic control |de=Flugverkehrskontrolle Thank you :)

Yes, I'm working on the User:Bugman/Infobox Aircraft template to replace {{infobox aircraft}}, fixing translations, dead download links, ambiguity, etc. For the ATCs, I have no idea how to handle this. I think this should be a new group at {{craft type}}, with its own table. Would you like to experiment with these, and already switch to the new template? Please feel free to expand {{craft type}}. I think this should also be supported by the craft parameter in the new template. For the category, maybe a new one just for these aircraft should be created. It could then be a subcategory of Category:Air Traffic Control, as well as maybe Category:Controllable craft.

Aircraft screenshots

I noticed your recent screenshot and have a suggestion for improving the quality. I would recommend using antialiasing, ALS, and advanced weather with clouds, as described in: Howto:Make nice screenshots. I was hoping to update the aircraft and cockpit screenshots for all the aircraft infoboxes, but that is very much a long term plan.

More translations

Servus! I can see you've translated some pages to german, nice done! I'll try the same for spanish and catalan. Maybe some interesting pages to have translated to our languages would be help pages, featured aircraft and airports, some devel. pages, changelogs and newsletters but by aware if are updated or at least complete. I can understand german but i'm not ready to write like you. Write to me if you need anything. Cheers--Catalanoic (talk) 14:30, 5 December 2017 (EST)

Here is a challenge for you both ;) Try fully translating the FG default aircraft page, including all the associated templates. These include:
I think German has a head start with this one! The {{craft */doc}} templates probably won't need much translated (unlike languages which use non-latin characters).
Bugman (talk) 15:14, 5 December 2017 (EST)
Thanks Bugman, i'll try to translate these pages, but as for templates do we need to create dedicated ones? I mean something like "Template:ES/infobox aircraft" (or [[:es:template:infobox aircraft]] ?) or inside the main template version (tipically from english). Thanks--Catalanoic (talk) 12:12, 6 December 2017 (EST)
I discovered that page, we can update it.
Hi Catalanoic
You don't need to create a new template In general you can do that in the english template using {{LangSwitch}} and it will automatically pick the right language on non-english pages. But don't worry, you won't have to learn wiki code for this. Just go to your template (eg {{infobox aircraft}}), search for {{LangSwitch| and add
|es = Your translation
to the existing language lines. All possible phrases there already have these LangSwitch (I went through most of these templates a year ago to translate them and there hasn't much changed).
See also Help:Templates#Translating templates
The page Cessna 172P/info is like a template and also has LangSwitch (even if its not looking like one).
(By the way: As far as I know the only template in this wiki translated another way is {{De/Newsletter-header}} cause of the complex {{#time:}} function)
Skybike (talk) 15:45, 6 December 2017 (EST)
For {{De/Newsletter-header}}, I would guess that this is because it is almost all translatable text. Johan is working on these templates, so the situation might change. The rest of the information is correct, of all the links above, only the page Ca/Cessna 172P needs to be created for a Catalan translation. Everything else goes into the already existing pages/pseudo-templates/templates.

For reference, I have cross-posted this as a challenge on the forum: https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=33397

Thanks Skybike and Bugman for your comments, and i'll translate first some main page links and these suggested from translation requests. I have a look to the forum thread.

Newsletter preload blanks in different languages?

Got this idea from a comment from Catalanoic: Could the newsletter template be made in a way that the template selects a preload text based on the language prefix of the page it is put on? See the Village Pump (perm).
