At least somewhat high-ish settings screenshot gallery (2018-2021)

If you want to know what modern FlightGear looks like in parts of the world with well developed scenery, on GPUs and other hardware from the last 5-6 years.

A flight simulator needs galleries for different categories of performance, settings and hardware - when it comes to visuals people want to know how a simulator looks on the hardware they actually have. FlightGear scales to run on a huge range of hardware - from reasonably fast integrated laptop graphics cards (GPUs), to needing mid range or high end discrete GPUs at high settings. This means, for example, that a person with a faster CPU and a slow GPU can still visualise a simulation using a flight-dynamics engine benchmark tested [link here] by NASA (JSBSim) on a flight-model with wind-tunnel data, and a weather simulation. Being a volunteer project, we don't have people to note performance, note download bandwidth at different flight speeds, and change settings to take multiple screenshots of the same view. On the other hand, FlightGear is freely available for you to see on your hardware! For a discussion on performance targets, settings, and hardware - as well as a high-ish settings hardware/performance profile for 2018.3 LTS - see the Hardware recommendations wiki page.

Feel free to use these to represent the FlightGear.org project.

Caveats:

Screenshots are what ended up in the wiki for one reason or another - a quick collection from glancing through thumbnails of recent wiki uploads, and screenshot of the month entries.

Not all screenshots have all settings turned up significantly (e.g tree density, or Anti-Aliasing). Visuals depend completely on how well people have looked into configuring settings, and learned things like the Advanced Weather and Environment simulations at the time they took the screenshot. Some screenshots have been taken on (old) laptops etc.

A lot of craft have been updated since these screenshots were posted.

Craft shown are just whatever the people taking high settings screenshots that ended up on the wiki were developing or flying regularly at the time, and show more of certain craft. There are over 900 aircraft projects at different stages are available through the launcher (Nov 2021), and many more projects are hosted on development repositories and 3rd party hangars - being a volunteer project, we don't have people to take screenshots of them all in the latest FlightGear every few years.

Screenshot of the month gallery

From a forum thread competition. This isn't a settings competition, and people post without modern renderers or using old FlightGear versions. Screenshots are often about new or work-in-progress aircraft, multiplayer events, or humour - not necessarily for showcasing or finished work.
