To see if that applies here, it would make sense to try an arbitrary canvas/image snippet in conjunction with a png image.

If that's indeed the case, we really ought to fix up cmakelists.txt to specifically check for libpng built into osg, because that's not the first time this is happening - at the very least, we should add a startup check and a console error, and probably expose the whole thing as a property to show it in the help/about dialog (link)
