The Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic transport (SST) was the first of the two supersonic passenger airliners to fly. The other one was the Concorde.

The aircraft is unique for its retractable canards, which enable takeoff/landing at speeds not much higher than those of conventional airliners.

FlightGear model

The project was conceived in July 2014 and is active since April 2015. Its goal is to implement accurate flight dynamics and systems of the Tu-144 entirely in JSBSim (and ultimately support testing in standalone JSBSim), as well as a clean and simple visual model.

Current status

As of September 2015, we have:

  • Plausible FDM and control;
  • In most configurations the aircraft follows manufacturer's flight envelope and centre of gravity;
  • It is damped well enough for default autopilot to control;
  • The visual and all animations display correctly in multiplayer.

Known issues

Among many other things that were rushed to test the FDM sooner – and, now that it works, need to be redone more thoroughly – the following are most noticeable and will be addressed first.

  • Empty cockpit, with user having to rely on HUD and property displays;
  • Unelegant hydraulic and electric systems;
  • No sounds in multiplayer.
