Done Done - Moving GPL non-files

Is it possible to move pages that are not a file description page, in essence all pages in the main article space, from Category:GPL to Category:GPL software? —Johan G (Talk | contribs) 15:36, 24 March 2012 (EDT)

Language template

As I consistently has added '''en:''' at many pages, where instead {{en}} should have been used, this would be a good job for the bot.

While I still think my way looks better ;-) I think consistency is of higher importance.

Extraneous initial headings

Sometimes heading are used to introduce things, when that text should just be put at the top of the page since it's implicitly a description anyways, e.g. see this edit. This mainly screws up the ToC placement, besides being really weird. I don't know the limitations of the bot or how it works, so would it be able to take care of these cases? I'm thinking that we could always undo edits if we need to, but in general it would be fine to remove any heading that starts the page content with (content start being defined as after any {{include}}s or blank lines). —Philosopher (talk) 01:04, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure it is best dealt with by a bot, as some of them could be condensed a bit, but I sure agree that the wast majority of those sections should be moved to the top of the page for the reasons you mention. While I am not sure that this wiki is fully ready for a style guide yet, this is one of the things I would like to have there.
Also a well written and not too long introduction is a really good way to (1) help a reader see if this is the page he was looking for, (2) give an overview and the basics of a subject, (3) make it easier to grasp the concepts that will follow and finally (4) perhaps introduce some of nomenclature that will be used in the article.

You misunderstood me, and partly that is my fault as I didn't clarify my point very well. There are two restrictions: that the heading that we would remove has to be the first heading in the article (so not some random heading in the middle – this is since introductions are always done at the beginning of the article) and that we would remove it only if there was no text before it (e.g. see the edit I linked to above, the heading was essentially on line #1 when leaving out the whitespace). The first restriction is actually redundant ;), but they are designed to identify what headings have a body that is introducing the article (though some articles, ~cough~, don't have introductions, and so we would have to revert the bot edits there and possibly add an introduction – that's the manual part of the process). What I'm saying is that in those cases there doesn't need to be a heading there, and in fact that it works better by removing that heading, because the top of the page is implicitly an "introduction" anyways. —Philosopher (talk) 19:12, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
I actually did understand you, but thanks for the clarification anyway. I did also get that a bot of course would not remove a heading if there was a section before it without a heading. :-P
I think we are pretty much at the same wavelength. In the wast majority of cases this could be done with a bot, but in some cases the first section would either be missing or be too long to plough through just to see if one landed on the right page.
What I am worrying about is the extra work and sometimes forgotten work in those cases where the introduction is missing or too long. Maybe the pages changed by the bot could be added to a hidden category, say Category:Pages with first section needing review (with a short explanation on the category page), so the pages more easily can be gone through after the bot is done? (That would mean removing the extra category from all pages that was ok though.)

I'm not aware of an easy command for the bot to list pages starting with a certain regex, but feel free to make suggestions. It'll need hand checking anyway, this is not something the bot could decide for itself...
Gijs (talk) 21:10, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
FWIW, you could run a simple SQL statement to check all pages for a certain regex (i.e. via phpMyAdmin) and then use the result as the input for the script/bot.--Hooray (talk) 02:32, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry guys, I lost my old post (with regexes!) due to the "external link" thingy (should really be a popup), but there's a -regex flag to replace.py that allows regexes. I'll rewrite my two regexes tomorrow (didn't have them saved). —Philosopher (talk) 02:49, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Here you are: User talk:BotFlightGear/Extraneous initial headings
Just had a very quick look while the bot was running and I think most of them cannot have the first heading removed. So, good luck going through the list. Might be best to check from top to bottom and remove entries once you've checked/corrected them.
Gijs (talk) 12:02, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Gijs! I'll sort through that list as I get time and place {{Done}} at the top once I'm done. I'm going to try and sort things into this new category: Category:FlightGear wiki:Needs summary or introduction, is there anything else that works out better as far as namespaces go?

Moving Category:List and Category:Resource to titles in plural form

I would like some help moving the pages in Category:List and Category:Resource to the newly created plural forms Category:Lists and Category:Resources as I figure that they are a good candidates for being moved by a bot.

Johan G (Talk | contribs) 13:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

I see that is have been done since quite some time, so thanks! :-)

Changed Category:Screenshots of dialogues in FlightGear to Category:Screenshots of FlightGear dialogs due to observation by Bigstones on the village pump section (permalink to diff).

Hi Johan,
sorry for not noticing this earlier. I've just started the bot ;-)
Gijs (talk) 04:41, 9 February 2015 (EST)
Done now!
Gijs (talk) 07:26, 9 February 2015 (EST)
Excellent! Many thanks! :-D
With the weather and interiors moved, I now only have to sort out the aircraft and scenery screenshots into the subcategories. :-P
