What to do first
You can start FlightGear with the command line or GUI. To position your aircraft on the carrier at startup, use the following command line options (Note the upper-case "N". You can copy-paste this. The slash will make it look like one line) :
Note: as of version 1.0, the default preferences has the Nimitz enabled, so you don't need to do the editing described below. Also, there is a command line option --ai-scenario you can use instead of editing.
fgfs  \
--carrier=Nimitz \
--aircraft=seahawk \
--ai-scenario=nimitz_demo

To enable the carrier, you must edit your <tt>preferences.xml</tt> file. This lives in your FlightGear data directory, the one under which your Aircraft, Scenery etc directories reside. Open this file in a text editor (such as notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on OSX - Linux users are probably familiar with such software... try kedit or gedit if not.)
Search for the word ``nimitz'. You ought to find something that looks like this :
<!-- <scenario>nimitz_demo</scenario> -->
You should remove the ``comment' marks so that it looks like this:
<scenario>nimitz_demo</scenario>
Also ensure that the line above that referring to ai being enabled is set to "true"
Save the file and quit the text editor.

You are now ready to start FlightGear. To position your aircraft on the carrier at startup, use the following command line options (noting the upper-case "N") :
--carrier=Nimitz --aircraft=seahawk
or
--carrier=Eisenhower --aircraft=seahawk

Note that several FG aircraft are carrier capable, but the Seahawk is possibly the easiest to fly to begin with.
