The '''Fieseler Fi 156 ''Storch''''' (English: Stork) was a small German liaison [[aircraft]] built by Fieseler before and during World War II, and production continued in other countries into the 1950s for the private market. It is famous for its excellent STOL performance. Conceived by Fi chief designer Reinhold Mewes and technical director Erich Bachem, Fieseler's design had great short take off and landing ("STOL") performance, and was built after winning a German Air Ministry prize for a new multi-purpose Luftwaffe plane. It was nicknamed the Stork due to its long gears which would hang down in flight. 2,900 were built during its 1937–1949 (1965 for the MS 500) production time. | |||
