Maverickalex:

Currently there are very few signs at the airports in FlightGear. KSFO has (see http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=903) and also a few airports in the NL scenery and the Caribbean are equiped with signs.

Explanation of signs
There are many types of signs on airfields. The information on the signs may also be painted on the airport pavement. The following examples are described as if you were on the taxiway or runway, looking at the sign.

Runway Signs

Taxiway location sign: Indicates the taxiway you are on.
|
Holding position sign: Hold here. From your position on the taxiway at midfield, the threshold for Runway 15 is to your left and the threshold for Runway 33 is to your right. This sign is located next to the yellow holding position markings painted on the taxiway pavement.
|
ILS critical area boundary sign: Seen when exiting the runway, this sign marks the boundary of the ILS critical area. When ILS approaches are in use, be sure your aircraft has passed beyond this sign before stopping on the taxiway.
|
ILS holding position sign: ATC may hold you at this sign when the instrument landing system is being used at the airport. Aircraft taxiing beyond this point may interfere with the ILS signal to approaching aircraft.
|
Runway boundary sign: This sign faces the runway and is visible to pilots exiting the runway. Taxi past this sign (dash past the dashed lines) to be sure you are clear of the runway.
|
Holding position sign for approach areas: Hold here unless cleared to cross. Taxiing past this sign may interfere with arriving or departing aircraft to Runway 15.

Other Signs

No entry sign: Do not enter this area. Aircraft are prohibited. This sign would be found at the entrance to a one-way taxiway or at the intersection of a road intended for vehicles.
|
Inbound destination sign: The military installation is to your right. Other information signs are Cargo, Term (Terminal), Ramp, etc.
|
Outbound destination sign to different runways: Runways 27 and 33 are to your right.

Placing signs
See also: Sign Specification Proposal

Sign types
These instructions specify sign types. They refer to the sign names in the FAA specification:

L858-Y
@Y
"Direction, Destination, Boundary" sign (black on yellow)
L858-R
@R
"Mandatory Instruction" sign (white on red with black outline)
L858-L
@L
"Location" sign (yellow text and frame on black)
L858-B
@B
"Runway Distance Remaining" sign (white on black)

These sign type specifiers are used to request FAA signs L858-Y, L858-R, L858-L and L858-B of unspecified size. It is up to the implementation to choose a default size. If the size is known, then a size digit is appended, which also refers to the FAA standard:

Size 1
0.460 m
Size 2
0.610 m
Size 3
0.760 m
Size 4
1.220 m
Size 5
0.760 m
L858-Y
@Y1
@Y2
@Y3

L858-R
@R1
@R2
@R3

L858-L
@L1
@L2
@L3

L858-B

Maverickalex: /* Explenation of signs */

Currently there are (almost) no signs at the airports in FlightGear. KSFO has (see http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=903) and also a few airports in the NL scenery are equiped with signs.

|
|
|
|
|

|
|

L858-Y
@Y
"Direction, Destination, Boundary" sign (black on yellow)
L858-R
@R
"Mandatory Instruction" sign (white on red with black outline)
L858-L
@L
"Location" sign (yellow text and frame on black)
L858-B
@B

Size 1
0.460 m
Size 2
0.610 m
Size 3
0.760 m
Size 4
1.220 m
Size 5
0.760 m
L858-Y
@Y1
@Y2
@Y3

L858-R
@R1
@R2
@R3

L858-L
@L1
@L2
@L3

L858-B

@B4
@B5

This pages is a list of high-impact UK scenery objects that are currently missing from FlightGear. It's subjective, please feel free to add entries, and especially to claim entries if you feel like working on one. The list is particularly biased towards things that are prominent from the air. Some of these things already existing in the 3D Warehouse, so another possibility is to contact authors there for permission to use the model under the GPL (including any textures), but many of the models there are rather too detailed for comfortable use in FG.

London
* London Eye (I suspect this is a hellish thing to model)(Done by MAverickAlex)
* Millbank Tower
* Centrepoint (yuck)
* BT Tower
* Tower of London
* Buckingham Palace
* Natwest Tower (not correct name anymore, I know)
* Lloyds building
* Bankside (Tate Modern)
* Battersea Power Station
* County Hall
* 8 Canada Square (HSBC building) - (being worked on by zakalawe)
* 25 Canada Square (Citigroup tower)
* More Thames bridges - and the flood barrier

Once the above are done, there's a very long list of other buildings - the rest of Canary Wharf, Whitehall, all the mainline railway stations, the list is endless.

Other Prominent City Buildings
Blackpool
* Blackpool Tower (IanBee has basic model - needs refining)
* The 'Big One' (a pig to model) and the rest of the Pleasure Beach
* 3 Piers (2 - Central and North already modeled by IanBee .. how do we publish these?)
* Gas Towers and Tesco complex on Approach to Airport (IanBee has these.. again ..how to publish?)

Manchester
* Manchester Hilton (Beetham tower) - being worked on by zakalawe
* The Rotunda

Brighton
* Royal Pavilion

Major Airports
MaverickAlex is planning work on major UK terminals from the start of 2009. If you're planning to work on a UK airport not listed here, it would be worth checking on the forums.

* Gatwick (EGKK) terminals
* Manchester (EGCC) buildings
* Stanstead (EGSS) passenger terminal
* Luton (Sleazy Jet home!) buildings - MaverickAlex has this basically done
* Glasgow (EGPF) terminal buildings
* Birmingham - bonus points for including Birmingham International rail station and a Nasal-scripted shuttle train between the terminals - same idea as EDDF and KSFO.
* Shoreham (EGKA) Buildings are a work in progress by VicMar
* Edinburgh (EGPH) - zakalawe plans to look at this in the near future, but help is welcome

Bridges
We have many of these already, thanks to work by Jon Stockhill and others.

* Dartford crossing
* Skye
* Erskine bridge (on the Clyde)

Power Stations
Again thanks to Jon Stockhill many of the cooling towers and chimneys already exist - what's missing is the main buildings.

* Torness - being drafted by zakalawe
* Cockenzie - will be done by zakalawe
* Longannet - ditto

* Dungeoness
* Shoreham (Done by VicMar)

Landmarks
Again the key here is visibility from the air - hence the absence of Stonehenge (?? - Depends on how high you fly).

* Angel of the North (Done by MaverickAlex)
* Stonehenge (???)
* South coast piers (Brighton Pier (ex-Palace Pier) done by VicMar).
* Brighton Marina - in progress by VicMar
* Glasgow 'sail'
* Spinaker Tower (Portsmouth) - in-progress by Fahim Dalvi
Command line

Maverickalex: /* Windows */

The command line is often mentioned as a tool for starting or setting up Flightgear, Atlas, Terrasync, FGCOM and other programs related to Flightgear. Many users simply don't know, what the command line acutally is or how to make use of it. This article shall help...

As an advice independent from what operating system you may use:
Try to use copy & paste as much as you can in order to avoid spelling mistakes, whenever you try to execute command line commands!
The command line will do exactly what you tell her and when you spell it wrong, she'll act the wrong way...

Windows
On Windows, you have access to the command line by clicking the "Start" button and then chosing "Run...". Type "cmd" (without quotation marks) into the field and hit Enter.

Note: Both Windows XP and Windows Vista might have no "Run..." command in the start menu, when you attempt to try all of this. You can enable the "Run..." command in the "Configure Start Menu" dialog.

You should see the so called prompt now, which says something like that:

Microsoft Windows [Version x.y.zz.abc]
Copyright and stuff

C:\Windows>_

That says you're operating on drive C in directory Windows. The blinking cursor awaits your commands.

You can simply change drives by entering <drive-letter>: like that:

C:\Windows> d:
D:\>_

And return to drive C in the same way:

D:\> c:
C:\Windows>_

Now how about changing the directory? Assuming you downloaded Flightgear into the directory "Flightgear", that is located on drive D and its directory "Games". You do the following:

C:\Windows> d:
D:\> cd Games
D:\Games> cd Flightgear
D:\Games\Flightgear>_

Easy, isn't it? You can also change directly into subdirectories:

C:\Windows> d:
D:\> cd Games\Flightgear
D:\Games\Flightgear>_

And if you got into the wrong directory somewhere, just try "cd .." to go one directory downwards:

D:\Games\Flightgear> cd ..
D:\Games> cd ..
D:\>_

That's most you'll need to know about the command line, when operating under Windows. Any commands that appear in the forums or in a wiki can be executed directly on the command line, after you have changed into the correct directory first.

Linux
Basics
On Linux systems, there are several ways to get a command line. As Flightgear does only run in a graphic X-Window system, we'll use a so-called terminal.

The mosty used window managers are Gnome, KDE and Xfce. First way to get yourself a console would be using the window managers menue:
*KDE KDE-Menue > System > Konsole
*Gnome Applications > Accessories > Terminal
*Xfce Applications > Terminal

A different approach would be pressing Alt F2. That should open a dialog box, where you can enter one single command. Depending on which distribution of Linux you chose and which window manager you use, you can try (all without quotation marks) "xterm", "konsole", "gnome-terminal", "gtkterm", "kterm", "xfce4-terminal"... there's a lot of graphical console emulators!

Now as you've got your console window, it will say something like that:

username@computername:~$_

This (especially the dollar sign) is the so called "prompt", where username should be the name of the currently logged on user and computername is the name of your computer.

Note the "~" (tilde) sign before the prompt. On Linux systems that sign indicates, that you're in your home directory, which normally should be equal to "/home/username".

On Linux systems, you can chance directories equally to the above described Windows method:

username@computername:~$ cd Flightgear
username@computername:~/Flightgear$ cd data
username@computername:~/Flightgear/data$ _

To go one directory back, you have to use "cd ..":

username@computername:~/Flightgear/data$ cd ..
username@computername:~/Flightgear$ cd ..
username@computername:~$ _

Now if you downloaded Flightgear to another place than your home directory, you can go anywhere else (remember, that "~" says you are in "/home/username"):

username@computername:~$ cd ..
username@computername:/home$ cd ..
username@computername:/$ _

Notice, that the "~" sign disappeared, as you went out of your personal home directory from /home/username to /home. The directory "/" is the so called root directory - you can't go downwards from here as all directories are based here.

To change directly to a specific directory, you may use:

username@computername:~$ cd /any/path/you/like
username@computername:/any/path/you/like$ cd /home/username
username@computername:~$ cd /some/other/path
username@computername:/some/other/path$ cd ~
username@computername:~$ _

Notice, that cd-ing to /home/username produces the "~" sign, indicating, that you're at your home directory, as well as "cd ~" directly brings you there.

Now this should be enough, to change to a desired directory, where commands can be executed.

Special commands
On Linux, the command line is a very essential tool and it provides a lot of means to do special actions.

To show the content of a directory, use the "ls" command. This for example shows the content of a directory, where flightgear and several other stuff is saved:

username@computername:~/flightgear$ ls
download_and_compile_mod.sh   plib-1.8.5         run_fgrun.sh
download_and_compile_mod.sh~  plib-1.8.5.tar.gz  run_fgrun.sh~
download_and_compile.sh       run_fgcom.sh       run_js_demo.sh
fgcom                         run_fgfs.sh        run_js_demo.sh~
fgfs                          run_fgfs_test.sh   run_terrasync.sh
fgrun                         run_fgfs_test.sh~  simgear
install                       run_fgjs.sh
OpenSceneGraph                run_fgjs.sh~

Okay. Imagine, you just want to know about the files and directories containing the sequence "run". In order to achieve this, you can pass the output of the "ls" command to another program. A very common filter program is "grep". You use "grep" by telling the program what to filter. Directing the output of "ls" to "grep" (filtering for "run") is done by using the pipe symbol: "|"

username@computername:~/flightgear$ ls | grep run
fgrun
run_fgcom.sh
run_fgfs.sh
run_fgfs_test.sh
run_fgfs_test.sh~
run_fgjs.sh
run_fgjs.sh~
run_fgrun.sh
run_fgrun.sh~
run_js_demo.sh
run_js_demo.sh~
run_terrasync.sh

Easy, isn't it?

Now on Linux, you can't simply rename a file into "filename.exe" to attempt to execute it, as you might consider in Windows. In Linux, every file has its restrictions, called mode bits. You can show them by using the "ls" command with option "-l":

username@computername:~/flightgear$ ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname    162 2009-02-09 20:26 run_fgjs.sh~
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname    205 2009-02-14 12:31 run_fgrun.sh
-rw-r--r--  1 username usergroupname    218 2009-01-27 23:23 run_fgrun.sh~
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname    165 2009-02-09 20:39 run_js_demo.sh
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname    162 2009-02-09 20:39 run_js_demo.sh~
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname    143 2009-02-14 12:30 run_terrasync.sh
drwxr-xr-x  3 username usergroupname   4096 2009-01-26 07:20 simgear

First, every item has its mode bit, shown on the very left in a scheme of drwxrwxrwx, followed by a number, the username of the owner (should be the same as of the current user!), the name of the group of the owner, file size, its last change date and its name. If there is a "-", the specific mode bit isn't set.

The first d in some of the items indicates a directory. Then, three groups of rwx follow. Each r means "file/directory may be read", each w means "file/directory may be written", each x means "file may be executed".

The first group of rwx shows the rights of the owner of the file, the next group of rwx shows the rights of the group of the owner and the last group of rwx gives information about what everybody may do with the file.

As there are some scripts out there, that can be downloaded, you have to make them executable in most of the cases (because downloading only sets -rw-r--r-- per default). Making a file executable can be achieved by the "chmod" command. We use the "ls" command with its "-l" option and the pipe to filter the output of "ls" by "grep":

username@computername:~/flightgear$ ls -l | grep download_and_compile.sh
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname  15263 2009-02-05 21:23 download_and_compile.sh
username@reggae-machine:~/flightgear$ chmod -x download_and_compile.sh
username@reggae-machine:~/flightgear$ ls -l | grep download_and_compile.sh
-rw-r--r--  1 username usergroupname  15263 2009-02-05 21:23 download_and_compile.sh
username@reggae-machine:~/flightgear$ chmod +x download_and_compile.sh
username@reggae-machine:~/flightgear$ ls -l | grep download_and_compile.sh
-rwxr-xr-x  1 username usergroupname  15263 2009-02-05 21:23 download_and_compile.sh

Notice, that "download_and_compile.sh" at first had the executable bits all set, then we take them away by "chmod -x" and give them back by "chmod +x". You can do the same with read and write rights.

That should be enough of command line knowledge, to perform several command line actions related to Flightgear and its Addons so far.
Some of these things already existing in the 3D Warehouse, so another possibility is to contact authors there for permission to use the model under the GPL (including any textures), but many of the models there are rather too detailed for comfortable use in FG.
Major Airports
MaverickAlex is planning work on major UK terminals from the start of 2009. If you're planning to work on a UK airport not listed here, it would be worth checking on the forums.

* Gatwick (EGKK) terminals
* Manchester (EGCC) buildings
* Stanstead (EGSS) passenger terminal
* Luton (Sleazy Jet home!) buildings - MaverickAlex has this basically done
* Shoreham (EGKA) Buildings are a work in progress by VicMar
* Edinburgh (EGPH) - zakalawe plans to look at this in the near future, but help is welcome

Bridges
We have many of these already, thanks to work by Jon Stockhill and others.

* Dartford crossing
* Skye
* Erskine bridge (on the Clyde)

Power Stations
Again thanks to Jon Stockhill many of the cooling towers and chimneys already exist - what's missing is the main buildings.

* Torness - being drafted by zakalawe
* Cockenzie - will be done by zakalawe

Landmarks
Again the key here is visibility from the air - hence the absence of Stonehenge (?? - Depends on how high you fly).

* Angel of the North
* Stonehenge (???)
* South coast piers (Brighton Pier (ex-Palace Pier) done by VicMar).
* Brighton Marina - in progress by VicMar
* Glasgow 'sail'
* Spinaker Tower (Portsmouth) - in-progress by Fahim Dalvi
Major Airports
MaverickAlex is planning work on major UK terminals from the start of 2009. If you're planning to work on a UK airport not listed here, it would be worth checking on the forums.

* Gatwick (EGKK) terminals
* Manchester (EGCC) buildings
* Stanstead (EGSS) passenger terminal
* Luton (Sleazy Jet home!) buildings - MaverickAlex has this basically done
* Glasgow (EGPF) terminal buildings

* Dartford crossing
* Skye
* Erskine bridge (on the Clyde)

Power Stations
Again thanks to Jon Stockhill many of the cooling towers and chimneys already exist - what's missing is the main buildings.

* Torness - being drafted by zakalawe
* Cockenzie - will be done by zakalawe
* Longannet - ditto

* Dungeoness
* Shoreham (Done by VicMar)

Landmarks
Again the key here is visibility from the air - hence the absence of Stonehenge (?? - Depends on how high you fly).

* Angel of the North
* Stonehenge (???)
* South coast piers (Brighton Pier (ex-Palace Pier) done by VicMar).
* Brighton Marina - in progress by VicMar
* Glasgow 'sail'
* Spinaker Tower (Portsmouth) - in-progress by Fahim Dalvi

This pages is a list of high-impact UK scenery objects that are currently missing from FlightGear. It's subjective, please feel free to add entries, and especially to claim entries if you feel like working on one. The list is particularly biased towards things that are prominent from the air. Some of these things already existing in the 3D Warehouse, so another possibility is to contact authors there for permission to use the model under the GPL (including any textures), but many of the models there are rather too detailed for comfortable use in FG.
* County Hall
* London City terminal buildings
* ExCeL (prominent beside London City)
* 8 Canada Square (HSBC building) - (being worked on by zakalawe)
* 25 Canada Square (Citigroup tower)
* More Thames bridges - and the flood barrier

Maverickalex: /* Decreasing the amount of faces (in SketchUp) */

This short article is designed to show you, the prospective modeller some very good tips when creating models for use within FlightGear or any other situation which is dependant on face count. Lets start with telling you why the face count is important. Every time you connect 3 or more lines together you get a what is known as a face.

Whenever you place your model in Flightgear the more faces that a model has, the more bytes of memory that model will use up of your computer. The more memory that your computer uses to load a model up the less it has to keep the simulation at a good frame rate. So...

It stands to reason that the less faces we use within a model the better it will integrate with Flightgear when you eventually place it in the Objects Database. For this demonstration we will use some simple models, used in the TNCM scenery.

Examples
Below you can see three beach umbrellas. Each of these is different in face count numbers, the one on the right having the most and the one to the far left the least.

I’m sure you will agree that they look to all intents and purpose as they are designed to look you can see just from the picture the face count is bound to be different, but lets look a bit closer at them. Here you can see them without a texture or paint applied

Have a look at the number underlined in red in the image above. This tells us that there are 136 faces in the image. That’s quite a lot for an object that is 2 meters high and the average pilot will fly over at between 80 - 140 knots at over 100ft. Yes sure, most players will go to explore this beautiful scenery with helicopters, cars or UFO, but after a while most of them will perform “only” takeoffs and landings. Taking into consideration those facts I think, we can still model this umbrella with quite nice level of detail using only 20 triangles:

Or, if you really want to make your scenery to take as low resources as possible you can build it using only 12 triangles:

The same goes for other models too. Take a look at the two recliners here. The one on the left has 68 faces the one on the right 20! and in my opinion the one on the right looks better.

Heres how they all look in Flightgear from ground level.

As you can see, you can achieve good result using only 15% of triangles to model umbrella (middle one), or even 9% by sacrificing some details (left one) and 29% in case of recliner.

Decreasing the amount of faces (in SketchUp)
I think, the main cause of such high number of faces in some models especially when using SketchUp and it’s simplified interface is the fact that this software wasn’t produced with making low poly models for 3D games in mind,and that makes it hard to manage face numbers. But you can still reduce the number of faces in models. Here is an example how you can make low poly umbrella. You can zoom in to see details in illustrations, their are in high resolution.

I’ll start by making pole for our umbrella. First, I’m placing a polygon on the ground.

Then using the push/pull tool extrude the polygon to the desired height and delete the faces at both ends of your pole, we don’t need them as they wont be seen.

Next we will smooth out the edges by first, left clicking three times on the pole which highlights the whole object, then going to the WINDOW menu at the top (or right clicking) select soften/smooth edges.

A new pop up window will appear with a slider. This should be moved passed the 60 degree mark and you will see the pole soften considerably.
And that’s it for the pole. Let's make umbrella. We start with a polygon.

Using the pencil tool we will connect the centre spot with it edges. (quick tip: to make your pencil go straight to the centre point run the tool around the outside of the polygon then move it towards the centre, it will snap straight to the centre point). Connect all the hexagons “points” to make six nice triangles.

Using the move tool grab the centre point and move it upwards to the desired height. Holding the shift key down whilst moving up on the axis will hold it on that axis).

Click on the umbrella three times again to highlight it all, and again using the move tool place it over the pole.

As you can see the umbrella is showing the purple face to the outside. If we were to leave it like this we would not be able to see the outside of the umbrella from above. But if we want to see the underneath we would be able to do so. To reverse the faces simply highlight one face and right click. You will see the window appear again. Select reverse faces and the correct face is to the outside. Then right click again and
select orient faces. This brings all the faces to the correct way.

And that’s it, we have low poly umbrella made with (if I count correctly) only 18 triangles. It is also advisable if you are making several models for the same are to ensure you make them separate. For instance when first making the beach area for TNCM I simply made the beach then made the umbrella from the same area. Placing the polygon on the beach and extruding it upwards. Don’t make this mistake. as you can see it make the face count jump sky high.

Make it in a separate area and you will find it has no effect on the face count like this.

Ok lets see what difference these few helpful hints can make to your model. For the first beach scene created in Flightgear i used up 13133 faces making it around 1.93 MB. which is huge. After redoing the beach using these great tips it came out at 2421 faces !!!! todays beach at TNCM? 4.95Kb That’s It, use these tips and you will be pleased to find your face count drops enormously.

My greatest of thanks go to Robert ‘erobo’ Leda firstly for helping me with the above information and secondly for allowing me to use his information and images for this short tutorial.

Maverickalex: /* Model */

This howto learns you how to model a helicopter and howto make it fly.

Model
In this howto we model with SketchUp, a free modeling tool from Google. Download it at http://sketchup.google.com.

What we need:
* Plans: for the helicopter you want to model, side views, top views, bottom views; as many diferent views as you can find.
* Photos: as many as you can find of different angles to.
* Measurements: if you do a search of the heli in google you can find lots of essential measurements such as length, breadth, height, rotor thickness, angles etc. You will need all this and possibly a little more.

Now we import a top plan of the helicopter into SkecthUp as an image and drawing over the top to create the tough shape of the body. Then it is a case of fine tuning it over a period of days/weeks/months. Keep in mind that your model will get heavier the more lines it has. So you need to choose between extreme quality or a small file, or pick something between that.

Group the fuselage together and create a seperate file for each part. The rotors in a seperate file, cockpit etc. Then, as you get some semblance of order, you can start pasting in place and it starts to look something. There is no hard and fast rule, no easy way around and no substitute for hours.

Use all the different face views in SketchUp, such as wireframe and X-ray so you can see everything you are doing. Keep checking if the faces are aligned; with the white face outside and purple inside (or that face will not be shown in flightgear). You could check this by going into View > Face style > Monochrome in Sketchup. If a face is placed with purple side outside reverse it with Right Mouseclick > Reverse faces.

If you are using the free version of SkecthUp you need Blender to convert the .skp file that SkecthUp creates to the .ac file that flighgear uses. See Modeling - SketchUp for a tutorial about that.

Place the .ac and texture files in FlightGear/data/aircraft/your_heli/Models/.

It was a quick rendition of the passenger steps used to get to and from your aircraft where the full terminal facilities aren't available.

They were designed to fit the boeing 787 and are at that height.

you can drive them about the airport using the following keys.

they are not yet animated to go up and down which is a future project, but feel free to do this if you are lucky to be tallented enough to do so.
