A view of FlightGear core and fgdata activity in [[Git]] since the 2.6.0 release. Each committer on fg and fg-data is shown here, as well as the part of fg where he's been working on. A big thank to all involved for making FG such a nice fireworks!
=== Project Rembrandt ===
Fred's been working on some fancy new effects, especially useful for our film-making enthusiasts.

The [[Project Rembrandt|Rembrandt renderer]] has a lot of potentiality when it comes to post processing effects. Indeed, the interesting property of a deferred shader is that all stages of rendering are kept into memory. Post-processing is as simple as using a filter on a camera.

So currently the effects added in git are :
* Night vision including amplification grain and restrained field of view,
* Cinema effect including :
** Vignetting,
** Color shift, with Sepia as default value,
** Radial distortion (barrel and pincushion distortion, with scale compensation),
** Lateral chromatic aberration (purple fringing),
** Film wear simulation.

{|
| [[File:Fgfs-rembrandt-old-timer.jpg|thumb|400px|Rembrandt old film style]]
| [[File:Fgfs-rembrandt-distortion.jpg|thumb|400px|Rembrandt ordinary lens simulation]]
| [[File:Fgfs-rembrandt-night-vision-2.png|thumb|400px|Rembrandt night vision simulation]]
|}
This won't make it for the 2.8 release but it's likely that an add-on will be available as it is contained in the data.

=== Unified Weather GUI ===
As most readers will be aware, FG supports two weather models - Basic Weather which represents METAR data directly, and Local Weather which models weather more realistically, with more variation. In 2.8.0 these were configured separately using different UIs. Stuart Buchanan and Thorsten Renk have been working on unifying the user interfaces to provide a more user-friendly and consistent interface. This work is now available in git.

=== Canvas News ===
<!--additions should also be added to:http://wiki.flightgear.org/Changelog_3.0.0#Some_of_the_major_changes_include: -->

As of 08/2012, the new [[Canvas]] 2D drawing system in FlightGear HEAD has now also support for:
* using raster images (vector images were already supported previously)
* nested canvases, where a canvas may contain images created by another canvas texture [[Howto:Using raster images and nested canvases]]
* creating GUI windows (not just widgets)
* handling GUI events using osgGA
* multiplatfom copy/paste support using two new Nasal functions: [[Howto:Clipboard access using Nasal]]

Support for nested canvases will make it possible to also load canvas textures into other canvases, so that you can, for example, easily load an instrument into a GUI dialog, or even use GUI widgets in MFD instruments, which is a feature based on real avionics, i.e. as used in modern airliners like the A320 or the 787.

Nested canvases also make it possible for people to easily implement GUI tools using the Canvas system, for example a GUI instrument or panel editor can be entirely implemented in scripting space now, without touching any C++ code. Similarly, GUI widgets could also be created in a WYSIWYG-fashion, too - so that even dialog editor or full GUI builders can be built using the Canvas system.

In addition, Tom has now implemented support for window stacking. Check out the demo video below, which demonstrates how "nested" canvases and window stacking works:

{{#ev:youtube|llVaasTEf44}}

Missing features, and features currently under development, are listed at [[Canvas Widgets#Missing_.2F_Todo|Missing Canvas Features]]

=== FlightGear Run-Levels ===

Recently, we were talking about implementing a standalone [[FGCanvas]] client, analogous to [[FGPanel]] - in order to be able to render [[Canvas]] instruments separately, on different computers.

However, obviously this new startup mode would not need many of the default subsystems, such as the FDM, sound, terrain etc. But, many of these subsystems are initialized in a hard coded fashion so that they cannot currently be made optional even though they may not be stricly required. Also, for a very long time, it's never been possible to fully reset FlightGear properly, this makes many things very difficult or even impossible, including the [[FGCanvas]] idea.

We have now started collecting ideas on how this could be changed, by making subsystem initialization more explicit using listeners, so that SGSubsystems can be dynamically allocated and freed based on setting signal properties, so that recursive run levels can be implemented. For more information, please see [[FlightGear Run Levels]]. Feedback welcome!
=== '''Flightgear On Android''' ===

A new developer has achieved a way to run Flightgear on Android phones. [[File:Flightgear Android Launcher.png|thumb|FOA]]

The project codename will be FOA;he has done a lot of Android and C++ coding. [[File:FOA.jpg|thumb|FOA ingame]]

His phone is a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and is running Android 4.04 (custom ROM but stock ROM should be OK). If your ready to test with us, please read the technical info then send a email to lacbrc@gmail.com!

TECHNICAL INFO:
It should have at least a 1GHz processor and decent graphics chip. Android 2.3 is a
must but a rooted device is not needed but can improve performance.
Not much in this, as we haven't finished it to a release yet.
He tested it on a bluetooth keyboard and a wired one through usb host mode. Hope you are interested in it!

If you're an aircraft developer and your aircraft is/are not on the list, please consider rating their status. All you'll need to know/do is described at [[Formalizing Aircraft Status]]. If you'd just like to get started contributing to FlightGear, this would also seem like an excellent way to get started.

=== New hangers ===

=== New aircraft ===

At the request by a new user of FG, Helijah has created and made available the Yakovlev Yak 18T in his hangar and GIT.

=== Updated aircraft ===

==== [[ATC-FS]] ====
The Air Traffic Control tool ATC-FS got an update. The old radar screen was replaced by a radar screen, which can display fixes, navaids and ILS localizers. This new radar is resizable, so you can use your big screen more efficient.

The next version is already being worked on, it will reimplement ATC-FS using the new [[Canvas]] system (scheduled for FG 3.0) so that a fully custom drawn radar screen can be created in scripting space, including custom GUI widgets (e.g. for flight strips) - without depending on any hard coded instruments or dialogs any longer.

This new design will eventually even make it possible to reuse ATC-FS for other purposes, or even include it in an AWACS aircraft that is multiplayer-enabled.

[[Image:ATC-FS.jpg|1000px]]

==== [[Mil_Mi6]] ====
The big old russian helicopter Mi-6 from the Mil design bureau has received a new update. More than a year after the last update a new structure of the Models-subfolder allows new instruments to be added much easier. Also the electrical system has been revisited and new instruments have beed added to the engineer panels. Please keep in mind that this still is a very early development version and therefore a lot of work still needs to be done. It is available from its [https://gitorious.org/mil-mi-6 gitorious-page.]
=== 3D models import webform ===
The webform to import 3D models directly into the DB is in production. Now you can use this tool to send your models to the database used by Terrasync. If everything is fine and your model respects the specifications written in the foreword, then it will quickly be shipped to all FG users worldwide through [[Terrasync]]. Yet another unique feature amongst the flight simulation world held by FlightGear. Thanks to Olivier, Clément, Julien, Martin, for their help&support.

With all the forms now working on the scenemodels website, remember you can:
* add a single object (if you only have one!!). Check here: http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submission/index.php
* update an object (for instance, a lot of power pylons are in fact communication pylones). It's here: http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submission/shared/index_update.php
* delete an object (if it does not exist anymore in real life). It's here: http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submission/shared/index_delete.php
* run a mass object positions import (if you added a lot of objets in one place). It's here: http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submission/shared/index_mass_import.php
* add 3D models you created to have them imported into FG scenery via Terrasync. It's here: http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/submission/static/index.php They can be specific to a city (for instance : the Eiffel tower), or shared (a new windturbine model, for instance).

Please read carefully the various forewords on the site:
* all data imported has to comply with the GNU/GPL license ;
* you must use the elevation format used by Terrasync to give your objects/models elevation, or they could be floating/sunk for most of users.

We hope to see a lot of scenes not yet available via Terrasync merge into scenemodels. Nothing is now easier, especially when used in conjunction with our Mapserver!
Remember that this is the strength of FG compared to other sims: everything can be in Terrasync and no need to download patches or sceneries here and there.

=== Scenemodels cleanup and update ===
A big cleanup has been done on our scenemodels database. A few thousands of duplicate objects have been removed (they were caused by mass insertion of navigation data, essentially). Nothing urgent but this makes the data in Terrasync lighter and more coherent. A script has also been launched to update the country associated with each object. While not perfect, now a lot more objects have a country!

The US state of Idaho is known for its remote airstrips in mountainous terrain. The [http://idahoaviation.com/idahoAirstripNetwork.php Idaho Airstrip Network] has details on many of them, including airstrip diagrams.

At this time of year, it's important to take into account the temperature and altitude of the airstrips, as they combine to sap the power and lift from GA aircraft. AVWeb recently [http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/stinson_crash_cockpit_video_ntsb_faa_207184-1.html highlighted] the (non-fatal) crash of a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinson_108 Stinson 108], which included a video taken by one of the passengers. Though the NTSB has only produced a preliminary report, it was notable that the aircraft was taking off from a grass airstrip at high altitude on a hot day and appears from the video to struggle to get airborne. The Stinson is broadly similar in performance to the c172p in our base package, and the airstrip (Bruce Meadows Airport, Idaho - U63) exists in our scenery. Those interested can try taking off using the c172p with 4 people on board (2400lbs max gross weight) and high temperatures. McCall Municipal Airport (KMYL) is 44nm away, and a good destination.
=== Did you know? ===
Did you know that the FlightGear project dates back to a discussion among a group of net citizens in 1996 resulting in a proposal written by David Murr? The original proposal is still available
from the FlightGear website and can be found [http://www.flightgear.org/proposal-3.0.1 on the FlightGear website]. Read it, you'll learn a lot about FlightGears' roots which still lead the project spirit.

=== Contributing ===
One of the regular thoughts expressed on the FlightGear forums is "I'd like to contribute but I don't know how to program, and I don't have the time". Unfortunately, there is a common mis-conception that contributing requires programming and lots of free time. In fact, there are a huge range of ways to contribute to the project without needing to write code or spending days working on something.

For ideas on starting to contribute to FlightGear, you may want to check out: [[Volunteer]].
So far, only a few have actually been rated, as can be seen in the list 'hockenberry' set up at [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApzphjA4w05ndF94Y2F0bzJTbHQ5QTJXZXJRcUVRbWc&hl=en_US Google Docs]. If you're an aircraft developer and your aircraft is/are not on the list, please consider rating their status. All you'll need to know/do is described at [[Formalizing Aircraft Status]]. If you'd just like to get started contributing to FlightGear, this would also seem like an excellent way to get started.
==== [[ATC-FS]] ====
The Air Traffic Control tool ATC-FS got an update. The old radar screen was replaced by a radar screen, which can display fixes, navaids and ILS localizers. This new radar is resizable, so you can use your big screen more efficient.
=== Did you know? ===
Did you know that the FlightGear project dates back to a discussion among a group of net citizens in 1996 resulting in a proposal written by David Murr? The original proposal is still available
from the FlightGear website and can be found [http://www.flightgear.org/proposal-3.0.1 on the FlightGear website]. Read it, you'll learn a lot about FlightGears' roots which still lead the project spirit.

=== Contributing ===
Everyone with a wiki account (free to register) can edit the newsletter and every contribution is welcome. So if you know about any FlightGear related news or projects such as for example updated scenery or aircraft, please do feel invited to add such news to the newsletter.''
== Development news ==
=== 2.8.0 release preparations ===
{{Main article|Release plan}}
Since the feature freeze on June 17, no new features may be pushed to our [[Git]] repositories. Aircraft outside the base package can still receive updates till July 17, when release branches will be created from the repositories. That is basically the birth of a new release. From then on only bug fixes will be accepted.

Thanks to the branching, development for the next-next release (3.0.0?) can start right away; even before 2.8.0 is released.

=== Rembrandt controls ===
[[File:Rembrandt dialog.png|thumb|left]]
A special [[Project Rembrandt|Rembrandt]] dialog has been created, to give the user full control over Rembrandt's rich feature set. The dialog can be reached via <tt>View > Rendering Options</tt>. By adjusting the various options, the framerate impact can be decreased.

=== Taxiway signs support improved ===
Flightgear does now better support the taxiway signs syntax of the apt.dat 850 spec.
Christian implemented the new specs and got rid of some old cruft along the way. The signs are also rendered now with a 3D case around and we support double sided signs as well!
[[File:3d sign front.png|320px|left|Taxiway sign, front side]]
[[File:3d sign back.png|320px|right|Taxiway sign, back side]]
Emilian updated the signs textures to have some shading on top, which improves the overall appearance a lot. Also, Now it is possible to make use of new special types, such as {critical}, {safety}, {no-entry} and {hazard}. See the [[Signs|Signs entry]] for more details.
[[File:3d sign special.png|320px|left|special sign variants]]

James was able to improve the rendering code considerably. The signs are now rendered per stg file into one geometry. This reduces the amount of geodes a lot.

=== Mailing list digest ===
== Interview with a contributor (NAME) ==
''In each edition we have an interview with a contributor. Suggestions for possible questions are available on [[interview questions]], you are invited to come up with new questions and interview ideas obviously! Anyone is free to write an interview (with him-/herself or others) for next month's newsletter! If you'd like to help interview a contributor or get interviewed, please do consider adding yourself to the [[list of interview volunteers]]! To keep this going and less awkward, we are currently trying to come up with the convention that former interviewees become next month's interviewers.''

* How long have you been involved in FlightGear?
* What are your major interests in FlightGear?
* What project are you working on right now?
* What do you plan on doing in the future?
* Are you happy with the way the FlightGear project is going?
* What do you enjoy most about developing for FlightGear?
* Are there any "hidden features" you have worked on in FlightGear that new users may miss?
* What advice can you give to new developers who want to get started on their first aircraft/new feature/Nasal script?

More questions are being collected here: [[Interview questions]].

Stay tuned for next month's interview, featuring FlightGear contributor XXXXXXXX
== Snapshot releases ==
Every now and then, easy-to-install development snapshots are created (usually, twice monthly). These snapshots depict a recent state of the development version of FlightGear. By using them users can test out features that will be included in the upcoming release. Testers are encouraged to file bugs at [http://code.google.com/p/flightgear-bugs/ the issue tracker].

The snapshot can be download via the links at the bottom of this page: http://www.flightgear.org/download/. Updates and feedback can be found [http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=10488&p=144233&hilit=snapshot#p144233 at the forum].
Development has started on a multiplayer map (similar to [[MPMap]] but as a desktop application rather than a web page, and using [[OpenStreetMap]] instead of Google).

[[File:Screenshot-FlightGear multiplayer map-1.png|400px|KSFO during a quiet period]]

OpenStreetMap data tends to be quite good for airports, since OSM have the option of using Bing aerial imagery and runway/taxiway/stand numbers tend to be readily visible from aerial photos.

Features available in this map include:
* Historical tracks ("breadcrumbs") showing movement of aircraft over time
* Label decluttering, meaning that in a crowded area each aircraft's label will be visible, and each aircraft symbol will be visible
* Colour schemes: stationary aircraft are grey, and you can give each aircraft symbol its own random colour to distinguish them in a crowded space. When you select an aircraft its label and trail will become bright red.
* Selected aircraft: click on an aircraft (or vehicle)'s label, and some details will appear on right of screen - track, groundspeed, etc.
* Measure distances between any two vehicles - select one and then the other and tick "measure" to see continuously-updated bearing and distance between them

All the way back in May 2011, we adopted a new status-rating system for aircraft.
====Berlin-Tempelhof (EDDI/THF)====
User Frank (aka fmg) is currently working on [[Berlin Tempelhof Airport]] (EDDI/THF) scenery ([[FlightGear Newsletter January 2012#Airport of the month|airport of the month January]]), what is declared to be the "Mother of all airports" by the British architect Sir Norman Foster.

The Berlin Tempelhof airport was opened officially on 8 October 1923, but there was aviation activity in this area before. In 1909 the Wright brothers showed their flyer there. During the 1920's it was the one of the busiest airports in Europe. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927 and was destroyed during the Second World War. Work on the modern building was started in 1936, but was not finished until the end of the war, when it became a U.S. military base. It became famous during the Berlin airlift of 1948-49. In the 1950's it was opened to civilian flights, and in 1993 it ceased to be a military base. The airport was closed on 30 October 2008.

Tempelhof airbase was not only an airport, but also a small independent town in the city of Berlin. It had its own power plant, waterworks, garbage incinerator, a railway siding, sporting facilities, barbecue area, and plant nursery. The aim is to have the airport area and the adjacent surroundings as complete as possible to bring a bit of the special atmosphere of this place to FlightGear. Most of the technical facilities have been modelled and send to the repository. The main building is in work. It's modeled partly based on original construction drawings and it is textured with photos of the real thing.

If you ever had the opportunity to arrive there by plane, you may remember the impressive experience of rolling with your plane under this mighty roof construction and walking away freely on the apron, even as a normal passenger. This gives a good impression of what aviation was like in former days.

Since you can't have this experience any longer in real life, maybe we will have it in FlightGear someday. But be patient: since it claims to be among the twenty largest buildings of the world, it will take some time to finish it.

Some impressions of the project and the progress can be seen in [http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15378 the forum topic] and in [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Ctdn-xPcI this YouTube video].
In order to keep the wiki database clean and small, it's important that all editors try to apply the following tips as much as possible:
* Limit the number of edits. One edit containing a big edit is better than several smaller edits (to one article). Every time someone saves an edit, the entire article is saved in history and thus the database. The following tips can help you minimise your edit count:
** Do not edit an article on a per-section base (by clicking the <nowiki>[edit]</nowiki> link next to a header). If you would like to make edits in multiple sections of the same article, simply edit the entire article by clicking the Edit button at the top of the page.
** Preview your edit(s) before saving, by clicking the preview button. Especially check for red links to non existing articles (usually the result of typos).
[[File:FlightGear demo at museum.jpg|thumb|FlightGear at the Museum of Flight, Scotland]]
Stuart Buchanan (stuart on the forum), ran a booth showing off FlightGear at the "Robots Live" event at the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune, Scotland, on Sunday 17th May. About 100 people tried landing an F-35C on a carrier, lots of flyers were handed out, and many compliments were received on the quality of the simulator. Demoing FG at an event at your local aviation museum is a great way to spread the word about FG. See our [[FlightGear Expo Checklist]] for guidance on how you can go about it.

==== FSweekend 2012 ====
With still several months to go, the FlightGear FSweekend team got the confirmation that [[FSweekend 2012]], the world's largest flight simulation event, will take place on '''3 and 4 November 2012''', at the usual location: Aviodrome museum ([[Lelystad Airport]], the Netherlands).

[[File:FSweekend banner 2012.jpg|left|270px]]
Until recently it was unsure whether the event would take place this year, because the museum announced its bankruptcy the Monday after last year's weekend. Aviodrome closed its doors by the end of 2011. Luckily a company was found that took over the museum and its collection; leading to the reopening earlier this year. The reopened museum is more attractive for children, as well as the average person (not just the true aviation enthusiastic).

The museum entrance fee gives you access to both the FSweekend and the museum. So when you've seen enough virtual stuff, there are plenty of real aircraft to discover. The FlightGear team would appreciate it if you are able to travel to Lelystad!

The [[UFO from the 'White Project' of the UNESCO|UFO]] aircraft is a superb tool for placing a new (or old) 3D object at any arbitrary location in the scenery with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Placing objects in the scenery is a really easy way to contribute to the FlightGear project. It doesn't require any programming knowledge, and you can contribute something valuable in 15 minutes.

Below is an overview of placing, editing, & saving objects using the UFO. You can get a brief overview of the movement and editing commands by pressing ''?'' while flying the UFO.

== Choosing your object ==
The first thing you need is a 3d model to place in the scenery. The FlightGear Scenery Database ([http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/ http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/]) maintains a huge library of generic models, which will have been included in your FlightGear installation.

If you have created your own model you should save it in a subdirectory of your FG root folder. Two options seem reasonable, although others are possible as well:

a) Save it in the directory Flightgear/data/Models/. That is the standard directory where the UFO will go when you press the Space bar. Let's say you have created a CAT III marker, called catii-iii.xml. In this example, we create a subdirectory Flightgear/data/Models/Tabu/ and save our catii-iii.xml there. The downpoint: The directory Flightgear/data/Models/ is the place where all shared models from the FG Scenery Database are saved and as your universe of own models grows, you might confuse both.

b) You can also save your own models in an other subdirectory like Flightgear/data/mymodels (or any other name). Or if they are shared models which have only one fixed position, like the KSFO terminal, you can save them in the respective subdirectory of the Scenery folder, e.g. Flightgear/data/Scenery/Objects/w130n30/w123n37/mymodels (or directly in w123n37). To browse objects anywhere on your computer, press ''l'' when using the UFO.

If creating your own object, make sure it is the correct size! In Blender, units are meters and the Caliper script may help. Note that you should be careful about using Google Earth, due to restrictions in their license that might prevent submitting your work to the FG database. See [http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3356 here] and [http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3415 here]. (Just using coordinates should be okay, because coordinates of real-world objects are not copyrightable, but be careful of other content.)

== Selecting the ufo ==

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_m49fbed81.jpg|400px]]

Now start Flightgear, and choose UFO as your aircraft.

== Placing objects ==
Once Flightgear has been started, fly with the UFO to the place you want the model to be positioned.

Note that you should not use Google Earth to determine the correct position due to licensing problems. See [http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3356 here] and [http://flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3415 here].

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_5fa8d7b1.jpg|400px]]

Let's say we want to position the catii-iii.xml object at the end of a taxiway. We stop the UFO just above this intersection and press the space key, a Select Model window will open up where the contents of the Flightgear/data/Models/ directory will be shown (or press "L" and you can go to any desired directory). Select your model from this list, then close the window. The selected model path/name will be display in green text at the bottom left of the FlightGear screen.

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_m184fb381.jpg|400px]]

To place the object, simply left-click on the position that you want to place it. By default it is placed completely horizontal and rotated to point North. It will probably not have the correct orientation and it will be partly covered by the surrounding terrain, but we can adjust that.

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_12ee70a1.jpg|400px]]

== Rotating objects ==
Fly closer to the ground with the UFO, so that you can see it better.

Now press TAB (or Ctrl-I), and use the resulting sliders to adjust the latitude/longitude/elevation/heading of the model. NB: "Pitch" and "roll" will not be saved, so using them might be fun, but won't help eventually.

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_439816e9.jpg|400px]]

See the [[UFO from the 'White Project' of the UNESCO]] page for more information on the UFO command keys and exported file locations, or press ? while in FlightGear.

== Deleting objects ==
There are three different ways to three different situations in which which you want to delete an object:

You want to delete the last object that you placed in this session:
: Press the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backspace backspace button].
You want to delete an object that you placed in this session, but you have placed one or two models after it:
: That means that it is no longer active. Activate it by placing one more model '''on''' the object you want to delete, press the backspace button. Result: The model you want to delete starts blinking, which tells you that it is active.
You want to delete an object that is already saved in the corresponding .stg file and you don't know where it is:
: You don't know the filename: The model you want to delete is probably a shared model. You find it in the [http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/ scenery database]. Now you know the model's file name (e.g. [http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/modeledit.php?id=45 generic_skyscraper_01.ac] or [http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/modeledit.php?id=537 Office26x22.xml]).
: You still need to know where you find it. Place any model on that building and press ''d'' to know in which file you find it (see [[#Exporting the result|Exporting the result]] below). If there are several objects of that type and you want to delete only one of them, find the one closest to the coordinates of your model placed on top.
: Open the .stg file, delete the whole model entry (see [[#Exporting the result|Exporting the result]] below). Done.

== Exporting the result ==
Now that the model is correctly positioned, press the ''d'' key to dump the model position data to the terminal. A few lines will be printed on the console, providing the necessary orientation data.

[[File:Placing_objects_with_UFO_html_m4cf0cbf7.jpg]]

The most important lines are the last ones:

# e000n50/e008n50/3089154.stg
OBJECT_SHARED Models/Tabu/catii-iii.xml 8.57928135 50.03667992 105.9972 111.1

The first line identified the location of the scenery file for the object. The OBJECT_SHARED line indicates the objects name, longitude, latitude, altitude and orientation. This can be read by FlightGear itself and can be ([http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/contribute.php submitted]) to the FlightGear Scenery Object Database.

You can also save these coordinates into your own scenery file so that your changes will not be lost the next time you start FlightGear.

== Saving the changes to your scenery ==

In the terminal window, you get three sections printed out by the UFO with very detailed information about what's going on. We need the lines at the end.

As noted above, the UFO helpfully exports the name of the scenery file where the object's coordinates have to be saved. In our example

e000n50/e008n50/3089154.stg

The default location for scenery files is Flightgear/data/Scenery/Objects/. Simply open the referenced .stg file, add the OBJECT_SHARED line to the bottom and save the file. Now you have your object's position saved, and it will appear inside the scenery every time you start Flightgear!

In our example we would open 3089154.stg in Flightgear/data/Scenery/Objects/e000n50/e008n50/ and add the following line.

OBJECT_SHARED Models/Tabu/catii-iii.xml 8.57928135 50.03667992 105.9972 111.1

For a short video demonstrating the .stg method, see the following video:
{{#ev:youtube|i2BSUOMyiIg|400|This is an embedded video!}}

If your are running Windows OS, then please refer to this video:
{{#ev:youtube|e93OUEp0YKc|400|This is an embedded video!}}

== Saving to XML ==

Alternatively, if you press the ''e'' key while developing scenery with Ufo, fgfs will generate an xml file with the dump of your current work in a "ufo-model-export.xml" file.

Under Unix, the file is saved to directory ''~/.fgfs''

Under Windows it is saved to ''%APPDATA%\flightgear.org''. Under a typical Windows installation the file will look something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOURUSERNAME}\Application Data\flightgear.org

(Note that some FlightGear 1.9.1 users have reported that pressing ''e'' gives an error message to the console and fails to save the XML file. The [http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3170&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=a14a7a3a2f2084f44295880fca7e2932 problem is outlined here] and [http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3170&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15 solution given here]--simply add a line to ~flightgear~/data/Nasal/IORules reading "WRITE ALLOW $FG_HOME/ufo-model-export.xml".)

== Loading the XML file as part of FlightGear scenery ==
You can later reload this XML file with --config= command-line parameter:

Example for Linux:
fgfs --config=$HOME/.fgfs/ufo-model-export.xml

In Windows, this is done using the Advanced dialog, found on the last panel of the FG Run GUI. Click Advanced and, under General, click the double-dot button, browse to the ufo-model-export.xml file and click OK.
