Aircraft in FlightGear are often distributed from a hangar. The official FlightGear hangar is called [[FGAddon]] and it contains hundreds of aircraft at different stages of development (including aircraft from up to 20 years ago). Many aircraft are also distributed via 3rd-party hangars.

== Licensing ==

The [[FGAddon]] hangar is distributed using the GPLv2+ licensing terms - see the official [http://www.flightgear.org/flightgear-policy-document/ FlightGear policy document]. Third party hangars are free to license their content as they wish.

The Messerschmitt AG only existed until 1969 and then fusioned with Bölkow-Blohm.
The BO105 was originally developed at Bölkow-Blohm. So before the serial production of the BO105 started, the "Messerschmitt AG" didn't exist anymore.

I think the {{param|manufacturer}} parameter for the [[MBB Bo 105]] was originally incorrectly created, by myself, by copying the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBB_Bo_105 Wikipedia article] manufacturer Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm. I'll change the parameter to {{param||Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm/Eurocopter}}. Cheers! Feel free to correct these yourself though. Hey!

I just saw your edit of the hangar page with the reasoning why you integrated the catalog.xml into the hangar list "if every hangar provides a catalog.xml one day it would replicate the hangar list."
I agree with you here, however beside one hangar that consists of one plane, the only two other unofficial hangars currently on that page are from me. And while I could start scraping more "hangars" for catalog.xml my current script requires them to actually be github groups so I highly doubt the number of catalog.xml enabled hangars will rise in the near or intermediate future.

The whole reason for me putting the catalog.xml hangars at the top was to promote the use of this much easier approach rather than manually downloading the planes. Therfore I agree that the table is a nice thing, but we should somehow still make the catalog.xml entries more prominent to encourage more people to actually use them, raising the awareness that this is a used feature and hopefully increasing the number of catalog.xml enabled hangars out there.

Additionally I think it to be a useful information whether or not hangars are update regularly so that people know where to expect updates (given that the models are improved or new models added) and where not.

Seeing the fact that however it creates a couple of GB of traffic every month on my server it seems there are at least some people using this feature so removing it might not be in everybody's best interest. If anyone steps up to fill the gap I'm more than glad to stop hosting them on my own but until that happens, removing the (as far as I am aware) only catalog.xmls out there kills a useful feature for little to no merit. Hi,

You added the tag "Messcherschmitt AG" to the BO105, but that's not correct.
The Messerschmitt AG only existed until 1969 and then fusioned with Bölkow-Blohm.
The BO105 was originally developed at Bölkow-Blohm. So before the serial production of the BO105 started, the "Messerschmitt AG" didn't exist anymore.

I think the {{param|manufacturer}} parameter for the [[MBB Bo 105]] was originally incorrectly created, by myself, by copying the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBB_Bo_105 Wikipedia article] manufacturer Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm. I'll change the parameter to {{param||Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm/Eurocopter}}. Cheers! Feel free to correct these yourself though. I just saw your edit of the hangar page with the reasoning why you integrated the catalog.xml into the hangar list "if every hangar provides a catalog.xml one day it would replicate the hangar list."
I agree with you here, however beside one hangar that consists of one plane, the only two other unofficial hangars currently on that page are from me. And while I could start scraping more "hangars" for catalog.xml my current script requires them to actually be github groups so I highly doubt the number of catalog.xml enabled hangars will rise in the near or intermediate future.

The whole reason for me putting the catalog.xml hangars at the top was to promote the use of this much easier approach rather than manually downloading the planes. Therfore I agree that the table is a nice thing, but we should somehow still make the catalog.xml entries more prominent to encourage more people to actually use them, raising the awareness that this is a used feature and hopefully increasing the number of catalog.xml enabled hangars out there.

Additionally I think it to be a useful information whether or not hangars are update regularly so that people know where to expect updates (given that the models are improved or new models added) and where not.

From what I understand, FGMEMBERS is also just aggregating hundreds of Git repositories anyways which on what I probed looked like all based on GPL or similar licenses so I hardly see any license issue. So I'm really pretty damn certain that no matter WHAT licens any of those planes is under, the mere fact that it HAS to be an open-source license (since we're talking about open github repositories) AND the fact that I'm not using their work commercially eliminates issues with any license I could possibly think of. The Messerschmitt AG only existed until 1969 and then fusioned with Bölkow-Blohm.

I agree with you here, however beside one hangar that consists of one plane, the only two other unofficial hangars currently on that page are from me. And while I could start scraping more "hangars" for catalog.xml my current script requires them to actually be github groups so I highly doubt the number of catalog.xml enabled hangars will rise in the near or intermediate future.

The whole reason for me putting the catalog.xml hangars at the top was to promote the use of this much easier approach rather than manually downloading the planes. Next to the update-catalog.py script is a directory called fgaddon-catalog/ To run the script, just execute: "./update-catalog.py fgaddon-catalog" The idea is to create a subdirectory tree for each catalog you wish to maintain. FlightGear has [[aircraft]] and other content available from 3rd-party hangars, some which are GPL compatible and also included in official distributions while others are independent. Aircraft versions range from requiring a developmental build, to being compatible with the latest primary release, to requiring an older version.

== Background ==
It is completely up to the original content author to decide how they wish to license their original work. GPL is just one option. Many people seem to prefer one of the variants of the creative commons license these days. If you are modifying someone else's original work, or incorporating portions of their work into your own work, then you must be respectful of the original author's license terms. If you wish to protect your work from being copied or modified (yet somehow still distribute it to users), FlightGear does not have the infrastructure built up to assist with that. Fgaddon is simply a resource offered to aircraft designers. It is a common area to share and collaborate for aircraft development. Historically it has also been the source of FlightGear aircraft that are included in the official distribution. Because fgaddon is closely tied to the main project, we do our best to ensure everything there is licensed with a gpl compatible license so we can safely distribute all those aircraft. We also do our best to ensure that fgaddon aircraft track upstream code changes in the flightgear program so that incompatibilities are not introduced. As others have said, the intention of FlightGear and our evolving infrastructure is to support and encourage 3rd party hangars, and we have no problem if developers want to use other resources to manage and distribute their original aircraft. it would be great to start seeing some of the other aircraft hangar developers distributing their work this way. From an end user perspective, you just add a single url to a single catalog file, and then you have instant access to download and update all the aircraft in that catalog. Next to the update-catalog.py script is a directory called fgaddon-catalog/ To run the script, just execute: "./update-catalog.py fgaddon-catalog" The idea is to create a subdirectory tree for each catalog you wish to maintain. This subdirectory can be called anything you like and it contains the config and administrative files for maintaining the catalog. I recommend you take a quick look through the script to make sure there aren't any hard coded paths that I missed. And of course the config file inside the catalog directory will need to be adjusted for each new hangar. The script doesn't automatically upload the aircraft like your original did, instead it just builds the content locally and I sync with a separate (rsync-based) script. I maintain a local copy of the flightgear ftp tree and have a script that rsyncs the whole tree at once.<ref>{{cite web

FlightGear has [[aircraft]] and other content available from 3rd-party hangars, some which are GPL compatible and also included in official distributions while others are independent. It is completely up to the original content author to decide how they wish to license their original work. GPL is just one option. Many people seem to prefer one of the variants of the creative commons license these days. If you wish to protect your work from being copied or modified (yet somehow still distribute it to users), FlightGear does not have the infrastructure built up to assist with that. Next to the update-catalog.py script is a directory called fgaddon-catalog/ To run the script, just execute: "./update-catalog.py fgaddon-catalog" The idea is to create a subdirectory tree for each catalog you wish to maintain. This subdirectory can be called anything you like and it contains the config and administrative files for maintaining the catalog. I recommend you take a quick look through the script to make sure there aren't any hard coded paths that I missed. And of course the config file inside the catalog directory will need to be adjusted for each new hangar. The script doesn't automatically upload the aircraft like your original did, instead it just builds the content locally and I sync with a separate (rsync-based) script. Next to the update-catalog.py script is a directory called fgaddon-catalog/ To run the script, just execute: "./update-catalog.py fgaddon-catalog" The idea is to create a subdirectory tree for each catalog you wish to maintain. This subdirectory can be called anything you like and it contains the config and administrative files for maintaining the catalog. I recommend you take a quick look through the script to make sure there aren't any hard coded paths that I missed. And of course the config file inside the catalog directory will need to be adjusted for each new hangar. The script doesn't automatically upload the aircraft like your original did, instead it just builds the content locally and I sync with a separate (rsync-based) script. I maintain a local copy of the flightgear ftp tree and have a script that rsyncs the whole tree at once.<ref>{{cite web
