The Tupolev Tu-144 (NATO: Charger) supersonic transport (SST) was the first of the two supersonic passenger airliners to fly. The other one was the Concorde.

The aircraft is unique for its retractable canards, which enable takeoff/landing at speeds not much higher than those of conventional airliners.

FlightGear model

The project was conceived in July 2014 and is active since April 2015. Its goal is to implement accurate flight dynamics and systems of the Tu-144 entirely in JSBSim (and ultimately support testing in standalone JSBSim), as well as a clean and simple visual model.

Current status

As of November 2015, we have:

  • Plausible FDM and control;
  • Agreement with known flight envelope and centre of gravity in most configurations;
  • Enough damping for default autopilot (most of the time);
  • Correct multiplayer visual and sounds.

Known issues

Among many things that were rushed to test the FDM sooner – and, now that it works, need more thorough remake – the following will be addressed first.

  • The cockpit has very few instruments, user having to rely on dialogs.
  • Unelegant hydraulic and electric systems.
