The Saab JA 37 Viggen is an all-weather attack/fighter aircraft. It had Europe's first pulse-doppler radar, and one of only two jet fighters in the world to sport reverse thrust. This version of Viggen was manufactured from 1980-1990, and the JA 37D variant flew in the Swedish airforce until 2005.
Flightgear version
The Flightgear version is the mid-80s upgraded version of JA 37 (not the JA 37D variant).
Features
- JSBSim FDM based on original Saab windtunnel data.
- Custom Canvas HUD built from Saab flight manual with 4 modes of operation: navigation, landing, takeoff and tactical.
- HUD shows radar tracks of aircraft plus scenario objects like ferries, ballons, tankers, carriers, tanks, bus, trains etc.
- The callsign (or type), velocity vector and distance of the selected track is also displayed in the HUD. It also display nearest tower.
- HUD can switch to Imperial units.
- Terrain warning system, with HUD indication and annuciator.
- Crash-detection and high-G structural break tied into the failure system, which is expanded with many non-standard failure systems.
- Reverse thrust. (so useful that the airbrakes were welded stuck)
- Dual releasing flares, 30mm cannon and guided fire-and-forget missiles.
- Compatible with the Bombable addon.
- Aerodynamic response to payload. (droptank & missiles)
- Checklists and stable autopilot.
- Aerobatic smoke in yellow or blue.
- Radar with 48Km range.
- Automatically controlled flaps.
- Multiplayer sounds.
- Instruments are in metric and Swedish description. But they have Tooltips, showing Imperial and English units.
- Eight Swedish Airforce liveries included.
- Selection view, with camera pointing to the aircraft from outside and towards the current selected MP/AI aircraft
