Introduction

The Dornier 328 aircraft is a shortrange commuter, developed and built by Dornier. It was the last aircraft made by Dornier, and the last airliner completely developed and built in Germany.

The developement has been started back in the 1980s as successor for the Dornier 228. Dornier found that there was a marketplace for a 33-passenger aircraft, so they created an aircraft with a complete round fuselage and the TNT-wing (Tragflügel neuer Technologie = Wing of New Technology) of the Dornier 228.

Developement started December 1988, maiden flight had been at 6. December 1991 and in October 1993 it had been finally certified. The aircraft had been developed for high climbrate and high speed, but short landing which was possible due the wing and the new developed propeller. As non-typical for this class of aircraft the flightdeck has been fitted with 5 Displays from the Honeywell Primus 2000 avionic. The cabin was very comfortable for its aircraft class, as it was wide, round, and there was an active eletronic noise supression- that together gave a jet-like feeling.

In the 90s Turboprop aircraft wasn't really liked, as flight companies preferred smaller jets. So Fairchild-Dornier developed the Dornier 328 JET, a jet driven version of the Dornier 328. There had been larger versions of this aircraft planned: Dornier 428 and 528, stretched versions of the Dornier 328, but was never built.

When Fairchild-Dornier went bankrupt, the production of the Dornier 328 had been stopped in 2005, only 217 aircraft (Prop and Jet version) had been built, plus 3 prototypes.

There are 4 Turboprop- variants available, and 3 Jet variants:

  • Dornier 328-100 (basic version, 33 passengers, Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119)
  • Dornier 328-110 (increased MTWO by 350kg, increased range), Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119B)
  • Dornier 328-120 (special short range equipement)
  • Dornier 328-130 (higher speed, improved rudder, Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119C)

Ground spoilers and APU had been optional on all Turboprop variants

  • Dornier 328-300/ 328JET (jet driven version)
  • Dornier 328 Envoy 3 (Business Jet version)
  • Dornier 328DBJ (Replacement of the Envoy 3 with a larger cabin)

The FlightGear model is currently in developement, simulating the Dornier 328-110 with ground spoilers and without APU and will be probably available sometime 2013, due to heavy real life load of the author. Special Thanks to the User Groucho from the FGFS forums, who made it possible that I could look into the Flight Manual!

Developement Notes:

Completed already
  • YASim FDM Turboprop based on detailed pilot reports and some few free available numbers from the POH mentioned in various accident reports bringing the fdm to a rating of 4. Unfortunately the fdm suffers from the crosswind problem with YASim. (Issue #772) I tried several different configs in the past months, compared with buckaroos aircraft, but all what I found was, that all aircraft suffers from this.
  • JSBSim FDM: will now soon replace the YASim FDM due to many advantages: better behavior; airfoil is known; prop datas are known; much more realistic turboprop simulation; icing can be simulated; realistic wing flex can be used; realistic gear behavior and compression; no crosswind problems, autoflight already stable tuned. FDM is already really close to rating of 4 - stall speeds and climb rates already near the pilot reports- needs more testing; needs tuning of roll and pitch rates.

08/20/2013: JSBSim- 328-model needs a new prop, as current behavior is far from being realistic....

  • New 08/20/2013: complete rebuild of the whole exterior model with better shape, new more accurate wings prepared for wingflex, Rembrandt-Ready, Ubershader with multiple lightmaps, Paintkit- Increasing exterior model level to 5 stars. Exterior-model Jet-Version already in the works and soon ready.
Testing the multiple lightmap feature. Here showing the logo lights at the tail, and the de-ice lights in FlightGear. Effects of Beacon and Landinglights still missing
Near Term Tasks (soon as time allows again after moving)
  • Dornier 328-300/JET

-creating the 328JET fdm -modifying the exterior model to the Jet version

  • finishing the flightdeck :

-backwall with detailed observer seat

-detailed pilots seats (with sheepskin rug ;-))

-Overhead Panel with fully 3d models knobs, switches, warning lights

-addings small details (pencils, placards...)

--modifiying the flightdeck to jet version (Overhead panel, center pedestal, Primus 2000 EICAS)

-using Blender's baking feature (full render + area lights outside for a more realistic shading) for the textures and keep them on less texture files as possible.

-modifying Syd's Primus 1000 to the Primus 2000

-adding CDU from Syd's Citation X

-modelling based on free available POH

  • using the Citation X flight director system, as also used in the real 328s.
  • add lights
  • making it Rembrandt compatible (No-shadow tags, Transparent objects, lights)
  • realistic sounds
  • adding it all to FGData
Mid Term Tasks
  • add cabin
Long Term Tasks

all what is left

Help needed for
  • programming systems like hydraulics, pneumatics, APU (for jet), CDU, missing pages on EICAS, MFD...
  • fixing crosswind problem on YASim (Issue #772- Maybe another YASim bug)
  • failures
