The Berlin Brandenburg Airport, also known as Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg "Willy Brandt", is the new main airport of Germany's capital city Berlin, located about 24km/13nm to the south of it's city centre. It will replace Berlin-Tegel and Berlin Schoenefeld, which will become part of the new aerodrome.
In FlightGear, work on EDDB began in 2018 and is now available for download here. Unfortunately, due to terrain changes this scenery is not available via terrasync. Authors are Ger272 and D-ECHO.
Terminals
Terminal 1 is located between the runways and is the main facility serving most of the aircraft stands. Part of the building consists of Terminal 2, facing former Schoenefeld Airport, which has become Terminal 5 of BER. Terminal 3 + 4 (extending T1 and T2) are estimated to be finished by 2030, increasing BER's theoretical capacity to about 58M passengers per year.
German Air Force Executive Transport Wing is planning to move it's hub and fleet from Tegel to a new facility on the northside, near Terminal 5 of BER. Also foreign leaders and politicians should arrive there.
GAT, FBO aswell as the Cargo Terminal are located on the eastside, south of 25R. The west apron is home to maintenance hangars of the Lufthansa Group.
Destinations
BER's flight schedule will resemble that of Tegel and Schoenefeld. Connections to Germany's biggest airports are operated by the Lufthansa Group, especially to their hub Frankfurt am Main. Destinations in the holiday regions are covered by the low cost carriers, frequent longhaul flights to the middle east and the US and via Frankfurt.
Controversies
Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg is (so far) best known for explosion in construction cost and time. Initially, the new Terminal was supposed to open as early as 2007. Before construction started, the date was postponed to 2011. Due to substantial grievances in safety equipment and more, the opening was postponed again and again, until all defects were fixed in 2020. Currently, costs are estimated EUR 5.9B, EUR 4B more than initially announced.
