About

This page is meant to provide a list of FlightGear aircraft that feature a complete and functional IFR-equipped cockpit panel, as specified in FAA FARs 125.205 [1]

Hopefully, this will help users coming from other flight simulators, to pick suitable IFR aircraft that can be used to conduct realistic IFR flights using FlightGear. On the other hand, this also meant to enable aircraft developers to more easily equip their aircraft with the required avionics for flights under IFR.

Note: As of 04/2009 this page is work in progress, and no aircraft have been added yet. Also, note that this page would basically become redundant, once an aircraft's completion status and its feature support are individually tracked in aircraft-specific XML files, as discussed in Formalizing Aircraft Status

Aircraft Instruments and Equipment - Requirements

Aircraft must be approved for IFR flight, and equipped with the following instruments and equipment in serviceable condition.

  • a. a sensitive pressure altimeter adjustable for barometric pressure;
  • b. a magnetic compass that operates independently of the aircraft electrical generating system;
  • c. an airspeed indicator with a means of preventing malfunction due to icing (pilot heat);
  • d. a turn and slip indicator or turn coordinator;
  • e. an adequate source of electrical energy, and an adequate supply of fuses, if appropriate;
  • f. a stabilized magnetic direction indicator or a gyroscopic direction indicator;
  • g. an attitude indicator;
  • h. a vertical speed indictor;
  • i. an outside air temperature gauge;
  • j. appropriate engine power and performance indicating instruments;
  • k. a power failure warning device or vacuum indicator that shows the power available to gyroscopic instruments for each power source;
  • l. fuel tank quantity indicators;
  • m. an alternative source of static pressure for the altimeter, airspeed indicator and vertical speed indicator; and
  • n. if the flight is to be made at night;
    • a means of illumination for all instruments used to operate the aircraft;
    • a means of illumination for all instruments used to operate the aircraft;
    • when carrying passengers, a landing light; and
    • navigation lights

Navigation Equipment

  • VOR
  • ILS
  • ADF
  • GPS
  • DME (optional)

Candidate Aircraft

This is a list of aircraft that may to some extent already fulfill most of these requirements, or that won't require much work to fulfill them fully. So, individual aircraft will mostly need to be checked and if necessary be modified to be moved to the subsequent section.
