Hi fellow wiki editors!

To help newly registered users get more familiar with the wiki (and maybe older users too) there is now a {{Welcome to the wiki}} template. Have a look at it and feel free to add it to new users discussion pages (and perhaps your own).

I have tried to keep the template short, but meaningful. /Johan G

Mailing lists

559 bytes added, 17:07, 5 May 2016
Dequoted and styled
'''Mailing lists''' are used for some of the FlightGear community's communications, in particular among the core developers who are working on the flight simulator itself.
Some questions are better asked on the mailing list instead of the forum. You , especially those related to core development or project infrastructure, but you do not strictly have to be a core developer to subscribe and/or post to the mailing lists.
== The mailing lists ==
Some of the lists are for discussions while some only contain announcements.

If you do not enter a password, then click one will be automatically generated for you.{{warning|Do not use a valuable password as it will be occasionally sent to you via e-mail, meaning}}<ol start="3"><li>Click the {{key pressbutton|Subscribe}} button.</li>#* If you want to instantly see responses, do not choose 'daily digest'. This option can <li>You will be changed at any time.# Wait for sent a confirmation email e-mail (usually it is delivered within 10 ten seconds, and but it can take up to a few minutes max). Click on the correct button.</li>#* This step is often forgotten!</ol>
When == Posting to mailing lists ==To protect list subscribers from spam, you are subscribing allowed to most of post there only after you have subscribed, and to send e-mails from the mailings list address you can post messages freelyare subscribed with. <ref name="MLPolicy">{{cite web|url = https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?p=244916|title You might be kicked off if you bring conflicts or noise= <nowiki>Re: Why is my post rejected from devel list?</nowiki>|author = <nowiki>curt</nowiki>|date = May 31st, though2015|added = May 5th, 2016|script_version = 0.32}}</ref> For the same reason, first posts are subject to moderator approval to catch the cases where people sign up for the sole purpose of posting spam.<ref name="MLPolicy" />
Discuss When posting to the lists, discuss your problem laying it out in as much detail you can and show that you are interested in the problem. If you are willing to work on it will also help, even if it is not related to coding itself. If your discussion is more than just asking for features to be added you have a better chance of getting help and you may find people there who can give you pointers on how to approach your problem. Also, be civil - avoid bringing conflicts or noise.
Keep in mind that many of getting a response from the lists are is usually slower than the forum and that responses may take several days. Should it take more than a week , you might want to probe the interest by responding to your own message. Sometimes you will simply find ; sometimes, there might be no reply as there is none. == Posting to a mailing list without subscribing ==Subscribing is not strictly necessary to send emails.Your post may be significantly delayed if you are not subscribed though. E-mails from addresses which are not subscribed to the list are held for moderator approval before they are posted. {{FGCquote |The mailing lists are conduits for an amazing number of spam attempts. To protect list subscribers we require that people be subscribed to the list before they can post. Also be aware that you have to be subscribed with the address you post from. This catches some people because we live in a world where a lot of us have multiple email addresses we juggle (or a mail server might rewrite your from address on the fly.) In addition, new subscribers start out as moderated to catch situations where people sign up for the sole purpose of posting spam (which happens a lot on the forum as well.)The list forum admins try to catch legit postings by new users to forward them along, and we try to manually unmoderate legit email address as we see them. But because of the high volume of spam that attempts to flow through the mailing lists, sometimes the legit stuff gets missed in all the noise. |{{cite web |url=http://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?p=244916&sid=4631caf8790729b40cba64e45615e05f#p244916 |title=<nowiki>Re: Why is my post rejected from devel list?</nowiki> |author=<nowiki>curt</nowiki> |date=<nowiki>Sun May 31</nowiki> }}}}
== Report bugs to the issue tracker ==
Bugs should preferably be {{create ticket|reported}} to the {{tickets|issue tracker}} instead of posting them to a mailing list.
You may have to {{register to sf|register a SourceForge account}} first.
