The picturesque Hilo International Airport (ICAO: PHTO) is situated next to Hilo bay at the base of two shield volcanoes on the eastern side of the Island of Hawaii, the largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago also known as the 'Big Island'. Hilo is the largest town on the island and is the international gateway to the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

The dramatic terrain of the Island of Hawaii is home to 5 shield volcanoes Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea. The volcanoes range from spectacularly eroded, to dormant, through to the continuously erupting Kilauea which modeled in Flightgear with multiple activity levels. Hawaii contains some of the most well developed scenery in Flightgear using latest engine features such as overlays.

Hilo (PHTO) is the training airport for the Cessna 172P and starting the C172P tutorials will take you there.

A 4k video of helicopter acrobatics at Hilo from 2018. The surrounding scenery is very roughly representative of what it looks like in 2020 (scenery is missing new airport, OSM2City buildings and roads, Project3000, and some settings like vegetation are turned down).
